Vanya was born and grew up in Bulgaria. She studied Textiles and Fashion before getting a BA in Book and Graphic Design from The National Academy of Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria.
She has been a professional illustrator since receiving her MA in Children’s Book Illustration from Anglia Ruskin, Cambridge School of Art, England. Her books have been published in Germany, Canada, America, England, Australia, New Zealand, France, and in editions including English, German, Danish, Taiwanese and French.
Highly commended at the Macmillan Children’s Book Prize for ‘‘Mo and Beau’‘, one of her final book projects for the MA Children’s Book Illustration 2011. Shortlisted in the top 20 of the House of Illustration and Folio Society’s competition 2012 to illustrate ‘The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories’ by Angela Carter.
She is a member of the Association of Illustrators (UK) and SCBWI British islands. Her work is all hand-rendered, using traditional methods ranging from dry technique to mixed media plus finishing touches in Photoshop.
Vanya lives in Cambridge with her husband and their daughter.
